She might be being genuinely rebellious, though. The Western world expects women to look a certain way. She might be saying "Fuck that. I'll do what I want. Not what society expects". We don't know what quirks of personality governed her decision either. For all we know, it might be a bit tongue-in-cheek regarding tattoos as cliché as well.
