Classic Americans, they called St Peter's Basilica , St Peter's Square. It's hardly surprising that one of the world's most powerful buildings has some use of the sun dials, a lot of buildings do.

Most churches do face East.
I saw something else about it resembling a lock and key as well but I can't find it.

Yeah the church's facing East thing isn't a coincidence, it's done on purpose to symbolize The Holy Spirit entering in a morning. I think pretty much all Catholic churchs have the same layout.

well, you learn something new every day.
i always thought the door to the south in the cross was the one that led to the demon infested catacombs. i've got Eternal Darkness to thank for that.
