Patriotic pride

No charge of course at the new Museum of Islamic Art in Doha, Qatar, which I enjoyed last month. Lots of lamps, mirrors, calligraphy, coins and a fabulous collection of medieval bling. My favourite moment, however, was when my son beckoned me over to look at two brass door ornaments from early 13th-century Syria or Iraq.

“Look dad,” he said, smirking as only a 12-year-old boy can, “a smashing pair of knockers.” “My work here is done,” I replied, ruffling his hair in fatherly fashion, “I can teach you no more.” And yet the glow of pride was not entirely paternal, it was patriotic too. That gloriously disrespectful British humour, handed on to another generation. One of our many gifts to the world.
