The framerate still jerks around when loading up textures, but they're not as frequent (only on the big maps when you go on foot). The cutscenes load up textures without you noticing too much now. The lifts are still hardcoded to take ages, but the Normandy Flight and the Relay Post loading screens load up in half, maybe 2/3rds the original time. Overall, it's a hell of a lot better on install.

Oh God, I remember that level so well. It's virtually impossible to stealth kill at one point and the game forces you to run around like a headless chicken after trying to commit some crappy map to memory. It's nigh on impossible on the harder difficulties. After that though, the game got a lot easier and straight forward.

Fun trivia - The story originally involved Red fighting zombie cowboys. Hence the Dead part of the title. Rockstar picked the rights and suggested that the devs just do a normal cowboy game instead. Which worked better for me anyway. I loved the duels and the graphics were awesome (especially the degraded out-of-focus film look)

then the playstation came out, and i was no longer cool

Running around like a headless chicken sums up exactly how I remember falling out of love with it. Up till that level it was like spaghetti-western-gamer-geekvana for me. So sad.

Oh I don't know, the Fort level and the Mansion finale redeemed it for me...just.
