G3 is pretty underrated. I used to hate it, but since you only need 3 quick shots to kill someone, it's far superior than that other assault rifle you get towards the end of your leveling up (the one that can be customised into a sniper rifle if you want).

the M14? i agree, the G3 is better. you can fire it faster and the iron sights on the M14 are shit, leaving me with the red dot as the only option for it, where i usually take a silencer with my G3. mind you, i'd always assumed it was more powerful and would become a more appealing choice on non-hardcore mode. i still sometimes take it, but just for variation. it has a satisfying kick to it. and i prefer it to the sniper version.

The first one was awesome. It still stands up now in terms of playability.
